The Mission Bay Aquatic
Center’s sailing program
is one of the most
comprehensive sailing
instructional programs in
the world. Our 30 years of
program development along
with our professional and
friendly staff combine to
offer the best youth sailing
instruction available. The
sailing staff are experienced, year-round
instructors for Mission
Bay Aquatic Center and

certified. |

BASIC SAILING
This course is designed for youth who have little or no
sailing experience and need to start at the beginning,
as well as for those who have moderate sailing
experience and can use a refresher. The course offers
15 hours of instruction in basic sailing theory and boat
handling. Time is spent in classroom sessions followed
by on-the-water practice sessions in an 8 foot singlehanded
sailboat, the Sabot. |
|
| |
ADVANCED SAILING
This course is intended as a follow-up to our basic
course or for the camper with a good background in
sailing (consent of instructor required). The 15 hours
of instruction familiarize the student with the Holder
14, a larger and more high performance sloop-rigged
sailboat. |

HOBIE CAT SAILING
Unlike conventional single-hulled sailboats, this multihulled
vessel is built for one thing... speed. This course
will familiarize the camper with the Hobie 16
performance catamaran. Instruction includes rigging,
sail trimming, boat handling, racing and righting the
boats after a capsize. Students must have a solid
foundation in the fundamentals of
sailing or have completed
the basic and advanced
sailing courses (consent of
instructor required). |
|
| |
PERFORMANCE SAILING
This is a performance-orientated course with emphasis
on making boats go fast! Campers will put to the test
all they have learned to get them to this point. A
variety of boats may be used including Olympic-class
Lasers. Advanced boat handling skills, racing
fundamentals, and regattas are a part of this exciting
and competitive sailing course. Students must have a
solid foundation in the fundamentals of sailing and
have completed the basic, advanced and Hobie Cat
sailing courses. |

US SAILING SMALL BOAT CERTIFICATION
Campers will be offered the opportunity to obtain the US SAILING Small Boat Certification based on having demonstrated certain nationally recognized basic sailing skills. Once they have completed these skills and obtain US SAILING membership, they can receive a validated Official Logbook of Sailing. This logbook is tangible proof of their sailing achievements. The Small Boat Certification is the first step in the US SAILING Certification system that can be upgraded as their sailing credentials grow! |
